Though Buddhism had originated in India, it is interesting to see how through trade and missionaries it was able to spread East into China, Korea, and Japan(along with several other east Asia countries). What is remarkable though is that even though the main concepts stayed the same, the details and other rules of the religion did not. By building the pagodas, shrines and creating little gold Buddhas, the religion of Buddhism had remarkably changed with the thought and ideas of several cultures. Would Buddha have wanted people constructing gold relics of him ? Based on what we know about his philosophy and ideas, i would think not. Originally a 'god' figure was not present into play, but somehow Buddha became the god figure that people worshiped, made offerings to, and also constructed 16 feet high statues of him.
